Metzada is an inhospitable planet of Epsilon Indi whose inhabitants - most descendants from refugees forced to leave Israel - can survive only because its men are highly skilled mercenaries, Metzada's one export that brings in revenue. When young Ari Hanavi freezes in combat twice, he has one last chance to survive and even become a "hero".
Scenes of battle, military command, and operations are expertly portrayed in this novel about a young man who must overcome his terror while dealing with his fellow soldiers and fighting an enemy force. Set in the same world as Not for Glory, which David Drake called "a swift-paced, brutal, excellent political novel about the soldier of the future".

Rosenberg (who sadly died way too young) is a very good writer, painting characters, cultures, and battle deftly and well. This set of related tales, actually a long short story followed by a novella, concerns mercenaries from the Jewish outpost Metzada, a bleak, airless rock which is all that is left them after they apparently were forced off Earth. It is full of family obligations, clannishness, moral quandaries, and abrupt deaths. The Prussian theoretician of war, Carl von Clausewitz, said that war is the continuation of politics by other means, something that the Metzadans know only too well. His "hero" is a Metzadan assassin whose cover is that of a military administrator, embodying in one person all the issues developed in the book. You will be sadder but wiser after you finish reading this book, as is the hero.Product details

Not for Glory Thousand Worlds Book 3 (Audible Audio Edition) Joel Rosenberg Maxwell Glick Audible Studios Books Reviews
One of the first SF novels I read, and even better the second time around, decades later.
I did not read .ordered by mistake
Mercenary space opera. This was a pretty good read for a wet and rainy weekend. I'd certainly try more by this author.
You need to read Hero, the first Metzada Mercenary Corps book, before reading this one, otherwise you will miss a lot in this story.
If you like military science fiction, get this. If you like good writing get this.
Firstly, the dystopia is well thought out. Secondly, the writing is good to superb -- this book should be read by most current best seller authors as an example of how to write well and commercially.
Not just a good read. It contains life lessons. I have recommended it to all my kids. Makes you a better person AND it is a good read. What's not to like?
As usual, Joel Rosenberg has written an exciting book. It is worth the purchase, particularly for any Christian.
