The year is 1971 and America's long romance with higher education is coming to an end, provoked by worsening economic conditions and growing campus unrest. Unfortunately for Geoffrey Yawlings, 27 years of age and a recent Ph.D. in history from Harvard, the only job he can find is a shaky two year contract at a mediocre state university in the Pacific Northwest--geographically isolated, deeply provincial--in a state where it rains nine months a year but which insists upon calling itself "the Utopia where all Americans dream of living". Geoffrey's new colleagues resemble nothing so much as recently demobilized officers of a defeated army and his students are stoned on pot most of the time. Worse still, the only way the university can be rescued financially is if the state legislature decides to approve a lottery. Then and only then will Geoffrey have a chance to waste his life in the academic backlands. But even this may not happen, particularly if a certain radical sociology professor manages to "sharpen the contradictions"... A Season in Utopia is a hilarious send-up of academic life in America--its characteristic human types, its rituals, frustrations, self-delusions, and harsh realities. Anyone who thinks his or her life would have been happier as a college professor needs to read this witty, entertaining book.

I haven't set foot on a university campus since graduating from one many years ago. However, I've always been interested about the life of an academic. Should I have stayed in academia instead of going for the money in private industry?

This book explains the practical details of academic life. Over the years, I've spoken with enough graduate students and professors to recognise the book's accuracy. I enjoyed reading it very much.

Highly recommended.

A Season in Utopia Mark Falcoff 9781483905501 Books Reviews

This book shows an utopian place that turned out to be a dystopia in disguise. The problem of finding oneself in such a place is figuring out how to scape from it. Falcoff’s humour, use of metaphors and historical accuracy, empowers this story of a soul trapping place and the few who managed to escape from it. It has been a long time since I read a fiction so compelling.
I truly enjoyed this send up of university life in the 70's. It is beautifully written and the characters deftly drawn. I truly began to care for the protagonist. I was a grad student in history myself during the early 70's and the book rings true. It made for a most enjoyable transcontinental flight and reinforced my opinion that I made the to g by decision in not going into academia.
The life of a university professor has been forever idealized in books and movies, but Mark Falcoff tells us how it really is in A Season in Utopia.

A fun and fascinating read, no inhabitant of the Ivory Tower escapes Falcoff's rapier wit the naive and idealistic first-year professor; the pompous blowhard resting on dust-covered laurels; the radical (and dangerous) campus anarchist; even those "forever students" than can never seem to graduate and move fully into adult life.

Through character development and fast-paced dialogue, the reader discovers how mundane and circumscribed life was in a back-water university in the 1970s, in spite of the supposedly-prestigious academic veneer. Sadly, much of what happened then still happens on today's campuses -- even at well-known universities -- so it is a must-read for anyone considering a job in academia.

Highly recommended.
